Yup, that guy really has a sad expression.
Maybe it would be interesting to explore a bit more the part about the girl leaving... is she happy, sad or senseless about that? Or maybe not... the guy's expression is enough, it does not matter what the girl thinks, shit happens, life sucks.
BTW, I am not sure I read his expression correctly, does he screams "why?", not able to understand what and why happened, or is it desolation, the face of someone who tried everything, failed and see no solution?
